Auckland Club 7's 2019

On Saturday at Waitemata Park, on a lovely day weather wise, 3 Marist teams competed for the chance to be crowned, Auckland Club 7's Champion. Under 20, Women and Premiers.

Our Under 20's went through pool play unbeaten, and were drawn against College Rifles in their semi-final, in a high scoring game, Marist came out on top 31-26. In the final against Ponsonby Kelston, the team started well leading in the first half, before Ponsonby Kelston had a big 2nd half, to win by 26-17. Key players for the Under 20 team were brothers Bryan & Siaosi Lealiifano both at Sacred Heart with Siaosi only being 15, and Mikey Filiga.

Our Premier Women from early in the tournament looked to be on a collision course with Ponsonby, with our Women beating College Rifles in the semi-final 22-14, as with the Under 20's, our Women started strongly leading early against the dangerous Ponsonby team. Mele Hufanga was always dangerous, with 1 try from a trade mark fend. The final score was Ponsonby 26 Marist 10.

The Premier team, won 2 and drew 1 in their pool. They beat Ponsonby Black 1st up by 33-12, had a close win against Papatoetoe 19-17, and then drew 19-19 against Waitakere, Hoskins Sotutu scoring under the posts late to snatch the draw,  which was enough to send them through to the semi-finals.

The key through the day was the never say die attitude, and not panicking when finding themselves behind. In the semi-final against Grammar TEC, Lewini Mosevakaca stepped up scoring 2 tries, with Marist taking a 12-10 win.

In the final against University we again found ourselves behind, close to full-time Hoskins Sotutu scored under the posts, with the conversion good, we thought this put us ahead, as there was a 1st half conversion that was good, that wasn't given.

So at 17-17, the game went to extra time, and Lewini Mosevakaca scored the winner much to the delight of the players, management and supporters in attendance.

As well as the Lealiifano brothers, we also had the Kapsins, Holyfield U20, Summer Women, and the Sotutu's, Kobe U20, Teuila Women, and Hoskins Premier.
