Our Latest Marist Life Member

16 Nov 2016

On Monday 14th November we held our AGM.

We are pleased to announce that our latest Life Member is Lawrence William John Hewitt (Known as Laurie)

Laurie has been a member of the club since 1955. Laurie left St Pauls College where he played 1st XV and was Head Boy in his last year in 1962.

Laurie played in the Under 19's and Under 21's in 1963 and 1964 before trialling for the Senior team in 1965, Laurie didn't make the side, so with fellow club mates helped organise and form the 2nd Grade team.

Laurie first joined the club committee in 1965 an played an important part of giving the players perspective on the move from John Street to Liston Park in 1965/66. Laurie continued to serve on the committee for a further 10 years at Liston Park, and was appointed Secretary of the club until 1980.

In 1981 he was appointed to the role of Secretary/General Manager, and was very much a part of the success the club started to have at that time.

He was in that position for 3 years until he reverted back to being solely a committee member for a further 10 years until elected Vice President in 1992, and President for the years 1994/1995.

Laurie was heavily involved in the 75th/90th and Centenary Committees together with the 2 Spillane Tournaments held at Liston Park.

Laurie is a true Marist Man, he lives on the North Shore, and even though it requires a lot of travelling, Laurie still tries to get to most games.

Congratulations Laurie on becoming a Life Member of Marist Brothers Old Boys Rugby Club.
