James SOMERSET

Date of Birth: 27/03/1985

Representative Teams

NZ Under 19 Team in 2004
NZ Under 21 Team in 2004, 2005 and 2006

Position: Wing Threequarter

Biography: Position: Wing, Born: 27/03/1985 at Bristol in England, Physical: 1.78m and 79kg. Test Caps: 0, Test Points: 0, Provincial Team: Auckland, Super 14 Team: Blues. James Somerset may have been relatively small in stature, but he was lightening quick and hard to stop when the tryline beckoned. In 2007 as a rookie to the Super 14 and the Blues, Somerset looked to learn all he could, whilst making the most of any opportunity that came his way. However, injury restricted his appearances for Auckland in the "Air New Zealand Cup", but this New Zealand Secondary Schools, Under-19 and Under-21 representative was considered to have the pedigree to make the step up to Super 14 rugby. Ultimately, his rugby career was curtailed through injury without him being able to fully display his undoubted talent. REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS: Auckland NPC (2005), New Zealand U21 (2004, 2005, 2006), New Zealand U19 (2004), Auckland Colts (2003). Below figures correct at beginning of the 2007 rugby calendar: Provincial Caps: 6, Provincial Points: 5 (1t), and Provincial Debut: 2004 v Bay of Plenty.

Position: 2nd Five Eighth and Fullback

Biography: Position: Fullback and 2nd 5/8th, Born: 15/01/1986 Moto’otua, Samoa, Physical: 1.81m and 96kg, Test Debut: 2005 v Scotland at Edinburgh, Test Caps: 26, Test Points: 30, Provincial Team: Auckland, Provincial Debut: 2005 v British & Irish Lions, Provincial Caps: 14, Provincial Points: 15 (3t), Super 14 Team: Blues, Super 14 Debut: 2006 v Blues (for the Hurricanes), Super 14 Caps: 14, Super 14 Points: 15 (3t), Just 19 years of age, Isaia Toeava joined the All Blacks in 2005 after only eight appearances in the Air New Zealand NPC but certainly held his own in his Test debut, at fullback against Scotland at Edinburgh. A talented exponent of the Sevens game, Toeava has the skills and athleticism to play anywhere from first five-eighths out. He played at second-five for New Zealand Under 19, but primarily at fullback for the Hurricanes in the 2006 Rebel Sport Super 14 [he was the only draft player, from Auckland, in the Hurricanes squad] and is predicted to have a bright future as a penetrative midfield back. At just 21 years of age, Toeave earned a recall to the All Blacks in 2007 on the back of some excellent form for the Blues earlier in the year in the Rebel Sport Super 14. Career Comments: • NZRU Age-Grade Player of the Year, 2005, • Played every match in his first Rebel Sport Super 14 season for the Hurricanes, • Scored two tries against Northland in his only start of the season for Auckland in the 2005 Air New Zealand NPC, • Received the 2005 IRB Under 19 Player of the Year award announced in November 2005 in Paris, • Scored 62 points in four matches for New Zealand Under 19 at the IRB Under 19 World Championships in South Africa in 2005, including five tries and 37 points from the boot, • Scored nine tries and a conversion in three IRB Sevens tournaments in 2005. Kurtis HAIU

Date of Birth: 14/07/1984

Representative Teams

NZ Under 19 Team in 2003
NZ Under 21 Team in 2004

Position: Lock Forward

Biography: Position: Lock Forward on the left side, Born: 14/07/1984 in Whangarei, Physical: 1.95m, Province: Auckland, Club: Auckland Marist Brother's Old Boys RFC, Provincial Caps: 62, Provincial Points: 40 (8t), Provincial Debut: 2005 v British and Irish Lions, Super 14 Caps: 41, Super 14 Points: 25 (5t), Super 14 Debut: 2006 v Hurricanes, 2009 was a pivotal year for Kurtis Haiu who really came of age as one of New Zealand’s commanding lineout jumpers. But for such a large, imposing forward, his real attribute lies in his mobility around the field, as he plays like another loose forward and will be pushing All Blacks Ali Williams and Anthony Boric all the way for a starting spot in 2010. Kurtis Haiu is now one of the old faces at the Blues this season, and he has the potential to make an instant impact in any game that he plays. While his hair makes him stand out on the field, it is his impressive work rate and dedication to set pieces that really impresses the fans. Haiu has represented New Zealand at Secondary Schools, Under 19 and Under 21 levels.
